Young Adult Addiction Treatment Program in Massachusetts
Young adulthood is a period of significant transition, and for individuals between the ages of 18 and 25, substance use can quickly escalate from experimentation to dependency. At Rockland Recovery, our addiction treatment programs provide age-appropriate, evidence-based care designed to meet young adults where they are and help them build a foundation for lasting recovery.
The developing brain remains particularly vulnerable to the effects of drugs and alcohol during this stage, and the social pressures of early adulthood can make it difficult to recognize when casual use has crossed into addiction.1
Addiction Treatment for Young Adults in Massachusetts
Young adults represent one of the highest-risk age groups for substance use disorders. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, adults aged 18 to 25 have the highest rates of alcohol use, binge drinking, and illicit drug use compared to any other age group in the United States.1ย In Massachusetts specifically, the opioid crisis has had a devastating impact on young people, with fentanyl and prescription drug misuse contributing to rising overdose rates among this population.2
Despite these statistics, young adults are among the least likely to seek treatment for substance use disorders. Stigma, denial, financial concerns, and a belief that addiction is something that only affects older individuals all contribute to low treatment engagement among this age group.1ย Our programs at Rockland Recovery are designed to break through these barriers by providing a treatment experience that feels relevant, accessible, and supportive for young people navigating early recovery.
Why Young Adults Need a Different Approach to Treatment
The needs of an 18-year-old entering treatment differ significantly from those of a 45-year-old with decades of substance use. Young adults are at a distinct developmental stage in which identity formation, career development, educational goals, and social relationships are actively evolving. Treatment programs that fail to account for these developmental realities may struggle to engage young people in a meaningful way.1,3
Several factors make young adult addiction treatment distinct:
- Brain development:ย The prefrontal cortex, which governs decision-making, impulse control, and risk assessment, does not fully mature until approximately age 25. This means young adults are neurologically more susceptible to impulsive behavior, risk-taking, and the reinforcing effects of addictive substances.3
- Peer influence and social pressure:ย Social environments play an outsized role in substance use patterns among young adults. College culture, workplace dynamics, and social media all create contexts where drug and alcohol use can feel normalized and even expected.1
- Co-occurring mental health conditions:ย Young adults experience high rates of anxiety, depression, ADHD, and trauma-related disorders, all of which are closely linked to substance misuse. Many young people use drugs or alcohol as a way to manage untreated mental health symptoms.1,3
- Educational and career disruption:ย Addiction during young adulthood can derail educational goals, career development, and financial stability at a critical stage. Treatment programs that help young adults stay connected to these goals are more likely to produce sustained outcomes.1
- Family dynamics:ย Many young adults are still navigating family relationships that may have contributed to their substance use, including codependency, enabling, or unresolved family trauma. Engaging families in the treatment process is often an important component of recovery for this population.
At Rockland Recovery, our clinical team is experienced in working with young adults and understands the unique challenges they face. Our treatment approach balances clinical rigor with the flexibility and relatability that young people need to stay engaged in recovery.

Treatment Services for Young Adults
Drug and Alcohol Detox
For young adults who have developed a physical dependence on alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, or other substances, medically supervised detox provides a safe starting point for recovery. Medical teams manage withdrawal symptoms and ensure each individual is stabilized before transitioning to the next phase of treatment.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Our full-day treatment program provides intensive therapeutic support in a structured environment. PHP is well-suited for young adults who need a high level of care but may benefit from maintaining some connection to their daily lives. Programming includes individual therapy, group counseling, psychoeducation, wellness activities, and life skills development.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
For young adults balancing recovery with school, work, or other responsibilities, our IOP offers flexible scheduling with both day and evening options. IOP provides ongoing therapeutic support, relapse-prevention education, and peer connection in a structured, yet less intensive, format than PHP.
Virtual PHP and IOP
We understand that young adults may face logistical challenges in attending in-person treatment. Our virtual PHP and IOP programs deliver the same clinical quality and therapeutic engagement via telehealth, making treatment accessible from anywhere in Massachusetts.
Sober Living
Our sober living program offers a supportive, substance-free residential environment for young adults in early recovery. Sober living can be especially valuable for individuals who need to establish independence while building the habits and support systems that sustain long-term sobriety.
Addressing Mental Health in Young Adult Recovery
Mental health conditions are deeply intertwined with substance use among young adults. Anxiety disorders, major depression, PTSD, ADHD, and bipolar disorder are all commonly diagnosed alongside substance use disorders in this population.1,3ย When these conditions go untreated, the risk of relapse increases significantly.
Our dual diagnosis treatment approach ensures that both addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions are treated simultaneously. Our clinical team uses evidence-based therapies, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed care to help young adults develop healthier coping strategies and address the root causes of their substance use.
For many young adults, treatment is the first time they have had the opportunity to explore their mental health in a safe, clinical setting. Our therapists create a non-judgmental space for individuals to process difficult experiences, build self-awareness, and develop the emotional tools needed for recovery.
Building a Life in Recovery
Recovery for young adults is about more than abstinence. It is about building a life that supports long-term health, purpose, and connection. Our treatment programs include components designed to help young adults develop the practical and emotional skills they need to thrive after treatment, including:
- Life skills training, including financial literacy, time management, and communication
- Educational and vocational goal-setting support
- Healthy relationship development and boundary-setting
- Stress management and mindfulness practices
- Connection to alumni programming and peer support networks for ongoing accountability
