What People Ask Before Starting PHP
What is a partial hospitalization program (PHP)?
PHP is the most intensive level of outpatient addiction treatment. You attend full-day clinical programming, typically five days a week for around six hours a day, then return home each evening. It delivers close to the structure of residential care without the overnight stay, which makes it a common first step after detox.
What's the difference between PHP and IOP?
The difference is intensity. PHP is about five days a week, six hours a day, for people who need a lot of structure and support. IOP is lighter, about three days a week for three hours, for people stable enough to balance treatment with work or family. Many people start in PHP after detox and step down to IOP, then to standard outpatient, as they stabilize.
Do I need to complete detox before PHP?
Often, yes. PHP is frequently the next step after medical detox, once the acute withdrawal phase is managed. During your assessment a clinician will determine whether you need detox first and help coordinate it. You do not have to sort this out on your own before calling.
Can I work while I'm in PHP?
PHP is time-intensive, so most people step back from work during this phase and return as they move into IOP. You still go home each night, and many employers protect treatment time under FMLA or similar policies. We can help you understand what applies and plan the step down to IOP when you are ready.
Will my insurance cover PHP?
Most major commercial plans cover PHP for substance use. We are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Beacon, AllWays, Unicare, MVP, Priority Health, CDPHP, and other major carriers. We are unable to accept MassHealth, Medicare, or state-funded plans. Call or submit the form and we will verify your specific coverage and out-of-pocket cost, often within an hour.
Do you offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT)?
Yes. For opioid and alcohol use disorders, FDA-approved medication can be part of your PHP plan, combined with daily therapy and any co-occurring mental health care, managed by our medical providers as one integrated program.
How quickly can I start?
For most people it is 24 to 48 hours between the first call and starting treatment. Same-day clinical assessments are routine when scheduled in advance. The exact timeline depends on insurance verification and, if needed, coordinating detox first.
