Why Our Dual Diagnosis Treatment Treats Both Conditions Together
About half of people with a substance use disorder also live with a mental health condition, and vice versa. Treating either one in isolation tends to fail. Our integrated dual diagnosis programs treat both at the same time, with one clinical team and one cohesive plan.
Truly Integrated Care
One team, one plan — not separate addiction and mental health programs you have to coordinate yourself.
Cross-Trained Clinicians
Licensed mental health counselors AND licensed addiction counselors (LADC) on the same case — addressing both conditions in real time.
Evidence-Based Modalities
CBT, DBT, MAT, and relapse prevention — therapies proven for both mental health and substance use, delivered in a single program.
Flexible Scheduling
Day and evening programming options so treatment fits around work, school, and family responsibilities.
Common Mental Health + Substance Use Combinations
Dual diagnosis isn't one specific condition — it's any combination of mental health and substance use happening together. Some of the most common we treat:
Depression + Substance Use
The most common combination. Substances often used to numb persistent low mood, but worsen depression long-term.
Anxiety + Substance Use
Self-medicating anxiety with alcohol, benzos, or other substances creates dependence while leaving the anxiety unaddressed.
PTSD/Trauma + Substance Use
Trauma symptoms drive substance use; substance use blocks trauma processing. Integrated treatment breaks the cycle.
Bipolar + Substance Use
Substance use during manic episodes — and to manage depressive ones — requires careful coordination of mood stabilization and recovery.
Personality Disorders + Substance Use
BPD and other personality disorders frequently co-occur with addiction. DBT-informed integrated care is critical here.
Multiple Co-Occurring Conditions
Many clients have more than one mental health diagnosis alongside their substance use. Our integrated approach handles the full picture.
Dual Diagnosis Care Levels: PHP, IOP & Outpatient
Most clients begin in PHP or IOP based on their assessment, then move down through levels as they stabilize. The same clinical team supports you through every step.
PHP
Partial Hospitalization Program
Hospital-level structure without overnight stays. The most intensive outpatient option, ideal when symptoms are severe but inpatient isn't required.
IOP
Intensive Outpatient Program
Structured therapy with the schedule flexibility to keep working, parenting, or going to school. Available daytime and evening.
Outpatient
Standard Outpatient Care
Weekly individual therapy and medication management. The right fit for stable maintenance or step-down from a higher level of care.

What People Want to Know Before Starting
What exactly is "dual diagnosis"?
Dual diagnosis (sometimes called co-occurring disorders or COD) means a person has both a mental health condition AND a substance use disorder at the same time. It's extremely common — estimates suggest about half of people with one have the other.
Examples: depression with alcohol use, anxiety with benzo dependence, PTSD with opioid use, bipolar with multiple substances. Treating both together — rather than addressing one and hoping the other follows — produces dramatically better outcomes.
Why is integrated treatment better than separate programs?
Mental health and addiction interact. Anxiety drives drinking; alcohol worsens anxiety. Depression makes recovery harder; substance use deepens depression. Treating one in isolation means the other keeps undermining progress.
In integrated treatment, the same clinician sees the whole picture. When a client describes a relapse trigger, the therapist immediately understands which mental health pattern is driving it. When mental health symptoms shift, the addiction counselor adjusts the recovery plan. Research consistently shows integrated care delivers better outcomes than parallel-but-separate programs.
Will my insurance cover dual diagnosis treatment?
Most major insurance plans cover outpatient dual diagnosis treatment, including PHP and IOP. We're in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Beacon, AllWays, Unicare, MVP, Priority Health, CDPHP, and other major Massachusetts carriers. Coverage for both mental health and substance use is generally treated equally under the Mental Health Parity Act.
Call us or submit a verification form — we'll confirm your specific coverage and out-of-pocket costs, often within an hour.
What if I'm not sure which condition came first?
You don't need to figure that out before starting — that's part of what the clinical assessment is for. Many clients aren't sure whether anxiety led to drinking or drinking caused anxiety. The chicken-or-egg question doesn't determine your treatment plan; what matters is that both are treated together going forward.
What's the difference between PHP and IOP?
PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) is the most intensive outpatient option — typically 5 days per week, 6 hours per day. It's designed for clients who need hospital-level structure but don't require overnight stays.
IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) is less time-intensive — typically 3 days per week, 3 hours per session — and it's the more common starting point for dual diagnosis clients. The clinical content is similar; the difference is the dose.
Your clinical assessment will recommend which level is appropriate. Many clients start in PHP and step down to IOP, then to standard outpatient.
Can I keep working or going to school during treatment?
Yes. That's the central reason outpatient dual diagnosis treatment exists. IOP and standard outpatient programs are specifically designed to fit around work, school, and family responsibilities. We offer day and evening programming options. PHP is more time-intensive but still allows you to return home each evening.
Many employers and schools accommodate treatment schedules under FMLA or similar policies — we can help you understand what protections apply.
How quickly can I start?
For most clients, between calling us and starting treatment is 24-48 hours. Same-day clinical assessments are routine when scheduled in advance. The exact timeline depends on insurance verification and assessment scheduling.
Where is Rockland Recovery located?
We have outpatient facilities in Braintree, Quincy, Sharon, and Bedford, Massachusetts — accessible from Boston, the South Shore, MetroWest, and surrounding areas. We also offer virtual care options for clients who can't reach a facility in person. Call us to discuss your location and the right format for you.
Treating one without the other rarely works. We treat both.
Most adults living with co-occurring mental health and substance use have tried treatment for one condition or the other — and watched the untreated condition pull them back. Integrated dual diagnosis treatment breaks that cycle.
